Dean Cooper

Dean was admitted to practice in 1976 and after spending approximately 12 months overseas he commenced practice in late 1977.· After a short stint in Hobart he moved to the North West Coast where he practised until his return to Hobart in February 1996.· On the North West Coast he practised with J K Levis & Co of which he became a partner in 1984 and remained so until that firm merged with Fuller & Stace in 1988 becoming Levis Stace & Cooper.· He was a partner of that firm until his return to Hobart.

While on the North West Coast his practice included family law, criminal law, personal injury and, to a lesser extent, general conveyancing.· He appeared as Counsel in the Magistrates Court, Family Court, Criminal Court and Supreme Court.

After returning to Hobart he worked with Phillips Taglieri for 7 years until joining PWB Lawyers in January 2003.· Dean joined Ogilvie Jennings in October 2006.· His work is now predominantly in the area of personal injury litigation representing both plaintiffs and defendants.

He has a particular interest in horse racing and the rules and regulations that govern that industry throughout Australia.· He has advised both the thoroughbred and harness racing codes and appeared as Counsel for both Stewards and licensed persons before the Racing Appeals Tribunal.

Away from work he maintains a long standing interest in harness racing including ownership and administration.· He was appointed a member of Harness Racing Tasmania in 1990 and became Chairman of that body in 1991 until his tenure expired in late 1993.· In July 1994 he was appointed and continues to be honorary Legal Counsel to Harness Racing Australia.· In December 2006 he was appointed a Director of TOTE Tasmania and he held that position until January until 2009 when he was appointed as the inaugural Chairman of the Integrity and Assurance Board of Tasmania.· After 12 months in that position he was appointed Deputy Chairman of Tas Racing.
