Carey graduated from the University of Tasmania in 2000 with a Bachelor of Laws and was admitted to practice in 2001, and has worked in private practice the majority of her career. Immediately prior to joining Ogilvie Jennings, Carey worked as an in-house counsel role as Manager Legal and Property and later Manager Legal and Procurement at Glenorchy City Council between 2016 and 2018 with dual reporting to the Director of Corporate Services and General Manager handling a diverse and substantial portfolio of work leading a team and managing legal, property, procurement and insurance matters.

Carey has had a broad range of experience, she has practised extensively in property, commercial and corporate law, conveyancing, elder and succession law, estate disputes and some civil litigation.

Carey is an elected member of the Law Society of Tasmania Council and is a current member of the Executive. She is also a current board member (since 2004) of the Hobart Community Legal Service Inc and has served several terms as president.  Carey is also a past president (2004 and 2005) and committee member of the Southern Young Lawyers Committee and is a past secretary, vice president and current committee member of the Tasmanian Women Lawyers Association. Carey is the former chair of the Law Society of Tasmania Pro Bono Committee (2017) and a committee member since 2010, current committee member and past chair (2015-2016) of the Law Society of Tasmania Continuing Professional Development Committee. Carey has also been a member of the Property and Commercial Law Committee since 2014.
