Richard graduated from the University of Tasmania with a law degree in 1986 and has a post graduate qualification in business administration. He has been a partner and director since 1998.

Richard initially worked in commercial and local government law, including a period lecturing in business law, before specialising in civil litigation in 1994.

He appears as counsel in civil courts and tribunals. He has particular interests in plaintiff personal injury claims, estate litigation,  medical negligence and industrial and disciplinary matters.

Richard is a senior member of the Tasmanian Civil and Administrative Tribunal and chairs hearings in the resource and planning, anti-discrimination, mental health and guardianship streams. Prior to the establishment of TASCAT he was Deputy President of the Tasmanian Mental Health Tribunal, a member of the Resource Management and Planning Appeals Tribunal and a member of the Guardianship and Administration Board, and he is a former member of the Local Government Code of Conduct Panel.
